The country of Côte D’Ivoire is 57 years old as it celebrates its independence from France under Félix Houphouet-Boigny. He would lead the West African nation until his death in 1993.
The flag of Côte D’Ivoire was adopted in 1959, the year before its independence. The flag is modeled after the French tricolor. The flag can be confused with the flag of Ireland which has the same colors but reversed.
The current leadership of Côte D’Ivoire has Alassane Ouattara as president. He held power when his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo was forcibly removed from office when he refused to recognize Ouattara’s victory. President Ouattara was re-elected in 2015.
Shout out to our Ivorian brothers and sisters on this independence day.
