In 1961, Jomo Kenyatta returns to Kenya from exile during which he had been elected as president of the Kenyan African National Union. A leader for Kenyan independence, Kenyatta was allowed to return to Kikuyuland in mid-August and was officially released by the British later in the month of August. He was held for almost nine years of imprisonment and detention. Kenya was given independence two years later. Kenyatta became prime minister.
