On this day in 1846, Rebecca Cole was born. She was an American physician, founder, and social reformer. She was the first black woman physician since Rebecca Lee Crumpler achieved the historic moment three years earlier. Cole began her education at the Institution for Colored Youth, graduating in 1863. She extended her studies at the New England Female Medical College and graduated in 1864. She wrote a thesis titled “The Eye and its Appendages”. She obtained a second degree in 1867 when she graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
