#BlackHistoryFacts for March 12: Malcolm X holds press conference and more…

On this day in 1926, the Savoy Ballroom opened its doors in Harlem, New York. It was known to many as “Home of Happy Feet” and was the first club that opened during the swing era. It was frequented by both black and white people. Also it was a famous venue for jazz musicians.

In 1964, Malcolm X holds a press conference since resigning from the Nation of Islam. It was held at the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York to discuss his new role in detail. Before taking questions from the media, he read a statement known as “A Declaration of Independence” which reflected Malcolm’s thinking at the time.
