In 1607, Susenyos fought a decisive battle against Yawqob at Gol in Gojam. Yaeqob was killed. After the battle, Susenyos was the ruler of Ethiopia, his throne name being Seltan Saggad.

In 1861, El Hadj Umar Tall seized Segou, destroying the Bambara kingdoms.

In 1972, Maya Angelou (pictured) premiered “Georgia Georgia” in New York City. Angelou was the first black woman to have a motion picture based on a play.
