#BlackHistoryFacts for December 30: “Don’t Buy Where You Can’t Work” campaign, Sigma Gamma Rho incorporated

In 1929, the “Don’t Buy Where You Can’t Work” campaign begins. It started on the South Side of Chicago after learning of unfair hiring practices. It wasn’t long before the movement caught wind across the country. New York, Los Angeles and Cleveland were cities who followed suit and participated in the campaign.

 

That same year, Sigma Gamma Rho was incorporated. It was actually founded in November of 1922. It was founded by seven teachers in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is currently headquartered in Cary, North Carolina with the slogan: “Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service”.
