#BlackHistory for June 10: Nelson Mandela writes from Robben Island

On this day in 1980, Nelson Mandela wrote a letter while imprisoned at Robben Island. The letter was sent out under great risk. The African National Congress read the letter as a statement, encouraging the people of South Africa to “Unite, Mobilize, Fight On! Between The Anvil Of United Mass Action And The Hammer Of The Armed Struggle We Shall Crush Apartheid!”

Mandela was released from prison on February 11, 1990 and became the president of South Africa in 1994.
