30 Years ago, TV sitcom “A Different World” debuted

The TV sitcom “A Different World” debut 30 years ago. It focused on college life at a fictitious HBCU named Hillman College located in Virginia. It starred Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable (yes, the same Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show”). The show originally focused on Huxtable’s life in college. After Bonet left during the first season, focus shifted to southern belle Whitley Gilbert, portrayed by Jasmine Guy and Dwayne Wayne, portrayed by Kadeem Hardison.

Hillman College was modeled after real-life HBCUs Spelman College, Hampton University and Howard University.

“A Different World” ran for six seasons from 1987 – 1993.
